Niyogi Books, after having launched four imprints—Olive Turtle (English fiction), Thornbird (English translation), Paper Missile (English nonfiction) and Bahuvachan (Hindi Illustrated)—is proud to introduce its newest imprint, Perky Parrot, with an aim to provide fun reads for children and young adults.

Perky Parrot is a chirpy, cheerful and talkative bird, who is here to share knowledge and fun with young friends. Books under this imprint aim to inform, educate and entertain a new generation of book lovers.

Following the formal unveiling of the imprint at Atta Galatta, Bangalore, on 9 December, Perky Parrot was launched in Delhi on Saturday, 16 December at Eureka Bookstore, M-75, GK2 Market, New Delhi.

The event was graced by Professor Nirmal Kanti Bhattacharya, academician and translator; Ira Saxena, Child Psychologist and author; Pranab Kumar Singh, translator, author and publisher; Sudha G Tilak, journalist and author; and Jaishree Sethi, Founder, Story Ghar.

Authors Pranab Kumar Singh and Sudha G Tilak read out intriguing portions from their books published under the banner of Perky Parrot while Prof. Bhattacharya shared how he became an ‘accidental’ children’s writer and Ira Saxena addressed the adults in the room, discussing the importance of children’s literature. Jaishree Sethi presented an invigorating storytelling session, sharing a story from The Umbrella Who Was Scared of the Rain¸ a beautifully illustrated title translated from Turkish and published under the banner of Perky Parrot.

Rooftop, India's leading online learning platform for live art workshops and professionally curated art courses, organized an inspiring workshop on Bhil Art by Padma Shri Bhuri Bai. The evening ended with the children colouring in their own Bhil Art-inspired drawings while enjoying a delicious butterscotch cake.

Adding to his views Prof. Bhattacharjee said, ‘Parrots’ incessant twittering is akin to children’s constant nonsense talks. Literature makes sense out of that nonsense. Perky Parrot series is designed to delight the children with carefree entertainment, not without some subtle morals too!’

COO & Director of Niyogi Books, Trisha De Niyogi observed, ’Perky Parrot is a vibrant imprint of children’s and YA books by Niyogi Books that will spark curiosity and imagination in young students. From adventurous fishes to poop-scientists, from rhymes about the solar system to mythological-monsters, we have a little bit of everything for everyone.’

Founder-President of the Dastkari Haat Samiti and author of three books under the banner

Jaya Jaitley had commented earlier,Our 3 story books together incorporate a common theme of how India’s craftspeople, who come from different cultures, deal with urban life and differently organised circumstances. They are a unique, funny, original way of storytelling by traditional artists through their own understanding of modern life in city cultures. I hope it creates a better understanding of their lives.’

Author of Solar System in Verse, astrophysicist Biman Nath commented during the Bangalore launch, ’Perky Parrot has come out with a stunning variety of books, and I am privileged to be the author of its first offerings. Solar system in Verse tells the story of planets, comets and other objects in our neighbourhood in the form of verses. Going beyond the things that are known, the verses, along with the superb illustrations, prod the imagination of young readers for things yet to be figured out about the Solar system.’

‘Authors often write and leave one part of themselves in their work, and my book, The Carrot Soup, has a part of me,’ said author Sadaf Hussain in Bangalore where he was present. ‘It’s a story that I think everyone should read to tackle the gender bias that we have in the society in the most subtle and fun manner. My association with Perky Parrot has been fabulous and it allowed me to narrate the story in the most authentic language that I feel comfortable and which relates the best with kids.’

Pankaj Saikia, who did the illustrations for The Carrot Soup said, ‘It’s my pleasure and privilege that I had the opportunity to illustrate one of the first books from Perky Parrot. Just like their name, the stories that Perky Parrot offers are full of cheerfulness and wonder. It was an absolute pleasure to illustrate the stories, as there was no limit to the freedom to imagine the worlds from the words. I am confident that each title that Perky Parrot offers will be a bridge way to that land where imagination runs wild and where our young readers will learn to take their first flight.’

Welcoming the launch of the imprint on 9 December at Bangalore, Lakshmi Shankar of Atta Galattahad said, ‘We at Atta Galatta, are very honoured to host the launch of Perky Parrot imprint. After months of planning, editing and coordinating with many authors, this journey towards completion must have been incredible. So, congratulations and we hope this imprint will be able to create curiosity and excitement among all the children.’
