Pranav Gupta Ashoka University founder elaborates: How Universities can adapt to AI?

Educational institutions need to adapt their instructional and evaluation procedures so it can accommodate the expanding range of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The development of AI has fundamentally altered how humans function and sustain in this modern world. This tendency is prevalent at colleges and universities as well, as they are attempting to adapt to the effects of AI on educational and research activities. Pranav Gupta Ashoka University Founder asserts, “The emergence of AI has created new opportunities for education and research, while also presenting new concerns that every higher educational institution must grapple with. Academic institutions are set to examine the ethical use of AI technologies while keeping in mind their legit structure and wider implications at micro and macro level.”

Notwithstanding concerns regarding the application of technology in academics, including several biases and prejudices in data and algorithms along with plagiarism threats, there also exist the upsides of AI in educational field which includes greater efficiency, personalized education and creative teaching-learning strategies. AI has the potential to simplify routine administrative jobs including data input, maintaining records, documentation and data storage. AI may be utilized to offer students individualized support for a range of services, including courses of study, financial assistance and academic counseling. AI-powered chatbots may respond to commonly asked inquiries, offer assistance and direction round-the-clock, and point students to pertinent resources.

“AI may be useful in text-generating tasks like creating emails and writing reports. But it has more possibilities than merely text production. It can be utilized for all kinds of general inquiries, document summaries, transcription, lesson preparation etc. It can greatly simplify routine administrative tasks and save valuable time. This can lead to effective management and make the process less taxing on the administrative workforce,” adds Pranav Gupta of Ashoka University.

AI may be used to assess students' progress and identify those who are falling behind. Universities may then be able to provide these students with the guidance they need. It can even help in designing personalize teaching programs and provide students with proper feedback.

Furthermore, AI applications can come very handy during research as they can give updated information about a particular area of research, fill research gaps and help in providing a speedy and quick analysis. Pranav Gupta emphasizes, “It can make research more efficient and interesting. The outcome would be much better and fruitful. Generative AI platforms can help in analysis of papers during exams and assessments alongside administrative work. We need to acknowledge how efficient the field could become due to this.”

Additionally, face recognition AI technology can improve the campus experience in a number of aspects if deployed with the right precautions and safeguards. It might be used to keep track of attendance at significant gatherings or lectures, giving educators a better understanding of their students' participation and allowing them to adjust their teaching strategies accordingly. Such technology can simplify administrative procedures like enrollment and student identity, rendering them more efficient and practical for both staff and students. It can also regulate access to restricted locations on campus, preventing unlawful entry and boosting general security. “Technology has the ability to significantly improve the university atmosphere in addition to allowing online education, accessibility to education and promote development. As we adapt to AI technology, several institutions of higher learning are making investments in it. The university scene will undoubtedly shift and become more advanced in the coming decade,” highlights Pranav Gupta Ashoka University Founder.
