‘Be Water My Friend: The Teachings of Bruce Lee’ by his daughter Shannon Lee contains his philosophy, which applies not just to martial arts, but to life.

According to the publisher, “In Be Water, My Friend, Bruce Lee’s daughter Shannon shares the concepts at the core of his philosophies, showing how they can serve as tools of personal growth and self-actualization. More than just an exercise in physical discipline, martial arts are an apt metaphor for living a fully realized life.”

Shannon Lee is Bruce Lee’s only daughter and has long managed his estate. Currently her daughter, Wren, the CEO of the Bruce Lee Family Companies and Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the Bruce Lee Foundation.
Shannon lost her father when she was just four years old but has preserved his legacy all her life. Like her father, she is also a martial artist and an actress but she is also a singer, a businesswoman and an actress. She has worked on many projects lo about her father and this book is but the latest.

“His words are timeless, really, and I just feel like when I read his words, I feel soothed. I feel hopeful,” she told Variety, “I feel energized. Those are all things that we will always need and, in some ways, now more than ever.”

The book titles come from his popular quote by the renowned martial artist, “Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless – like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

Shannon used personal anecdotes and excerpts from Lee’s journals to illustrate this philosophy and provide an insightful guide to help readers “practice and nourish our best growth.”

“Writing the book was a journey for me,” Shannon Lee told USA TODAY. “I felt like as I was working on the book, the book was working on me, as well.”

“Be Water My Friend: The Teachings of Bruce Lee” by Shannon Lee will release on October 15th, 2020.
