0 624

All ye bibliophiles who have been missing browsing around your favourite stores, we’ve got happy news. These independent bookstores are now letting your order online and will deliver your books to your doorstep.

The lockdown has had some silver linings for bookworms. We have been able to finish all those books that were lying around for months, unread. Some of us have revisited old favourites.

Books have been a constant support for us during these gloomy days. But we do miss the occasional trips to our favourite bookstores, browsing, and returning with a new stash. We might not be able to go out to bookstores, but we found some independent bookstores which are making an effort to deliver books to your doorstep.

Here are 6 indie bookstores across India that have carefully curated a wide range of books which you will not find in leading chains like Oxford or Starmark.

Walking Bookfairs

Initially based out of Bhubaneshwar in Odisha, Walking Bookfairs is the brainchild of Akshaya Bahibala and Satabdi Mishra. With a mission to popularise Indian writings and instil love for books in all, the duo set out with books in their backpacks and did door-to-door visits in the small towns of Koraput district in Odisha. Today Walking Bookfairs is spread over 20 states across the country, with Bangalore being an important hub. The bookstore is a cosy place with a carefully curated collection that gets updated on a regular basis. In these trying times, they have partnered with Swiggy to deliver books to your doorstep. Their ‘book mobile’, a library and bookstore on wheels, has also been on the go and has covered over 35,000 km to deliver books to everyone. Head to their social media page for more information.

May Day Bookstore

This Delhi-based left wing book store was launched on May Day, (May 1) in 2012. The space they occupy in Shadi Khampur in west Delhi is pretty unique. Attached to a community space which was earlier used by numerous theatre companies, you can easily spend time at the quaint space and enjoy plays, shows, music gigs, and even indulge in conversations with fellow readers. From Marx to Gramsci: A Reader in Revolutionary Marxist Politics From Marx to Gramsci offers a readable introduction to the historical contexts, lives, and revolutionary ideas of six central thinkers in the Marxist tradition – Karl Marx, Frederick Engels, Rosa Luxemburg, V. I. Lenin, Leon Trotsky, and Antonio Gramsci. A clear and well-documented introduction demonstrates how their varied contributions represent a revolutionary Marxist synthesis, providing an understanding of capitalist development, a theory of the labor movement, a strategy for revolution, and a conception of the transition to socialism. The bulk of the volume provides a representative sampling of Marxist writings offering insights into the dynamics of history, politics, society, and economics, with an emphasis on struggles for social change. From Marx to Gramsci concludes with a searching discussion, drawing from various critics of Marxism and realities of the late twentieth century, of whether revolutionary Marxism actually has a future. @haymarketbooks Price – ₹ 795 To order books, send us an e-mail at mayday@leftword.com or call +91 11 25709456.

Spent the day at the beautiful Earthcare Books, Calcutta – a magical little bookstore complete with Mughal arches. With a carefully selected collection including titles like Malabar Muslim Cookery and The Hour Of The Goddess – Memories of Women, Food & Ritual in Bengal, the spot is a haven for the free thinker. It has an entire section for Dalit authors, huge amounts of books on agricultural revolution, tons of rare Chomsky, and gems like Galeano. It has a magical selection of children's books, old wooden children's toys, and special edition collections including Songs of Sappho and Japanese Fairy Tales under Peter Pauper Press. I also located Dr BR Ambedkar's Annihilation Of Caste! Please visit if you're in town…because #booksneedpeople. Xx PS:The picture shows only half the store.
