Gangster movies have their own appeal of narrating tales inspired by real life events which wreaked havoc to humanity. While Hollywood has done a far better job in depicting gangster history, Bollywood has decently managed to make a few movies loosely based and inspired by true gangster lords. Here are 5 movies which were based on real life gangsters:

1. Company

This super hit movie which was a big aesthetic surprise for people back in 2002 was rumoured to have been based on the real life friendship of underworld lords Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Rajan, who were pretty close knit prior to the 1993 Mumbai blasts. The movie stars Ajay Devgn and Viveik Oberoi in the lead roles and tells the tale of two gangsters who managed to stay close friends before falling apart.

2. Shootout At Wadala

This Sanjay Gupta venture was supposedly based on the life of Mumbai gangster Manya Surve. The fictionalised account follows Manya, who is in prison for killing a gangster who attacked his brother. When Manya finally gets free, he forms his own gang and vows to seek revenge.

3. Black Friday

This is one of the most authentic accounts which showed how the city of Mumbai fell under the shadow of the Mafia. Based on S Hussain Zaidi’s book, this Anurag Kashyap movie is a well researched project which depicts how the Mumbai’s gangsters were linked to Pakistan’s intelligence set-up. The film covers the 1993 blasts and the riots which broke after it and also depicts how Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon were attached to its execution.

4. D Day

This is yet another attempt at depicting incidents from the lives of Dawood Ibrahim. This one has Rishi Kapoor in the lead role who is essaying the character of Iqbal Seth, a fictional character. The movie follows Indian agencies trying to capture him and the mission falling apart due to some miscalculations in the plan.

5. Once Upon A Time In Mumbai

This one is inspired and based on the life of gangster Haji Mastan, who was the terror lord in Mumbai back in the 60’s and the 70’s. The movie was obviously heavily fictionalised but the portrayals of Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi’s characters were inspired from the relationship between Haji Mastan and his disciple Dawood Ibrahim.
