The Beijing Spring Book Fair of 2026 has officially kicked off in Beijing, making the entire city a hub of reading and culture for the next month.

Lasting up to May 17th, the event is bigger than ever before with almost 2,000 bookstores participating in the event in Beijing, making it one of the biggest public reading campaigns in China.

Scheduled to take place just days before the annual week of National Reading in China, the event is taking on a new theme of "film and reading," which comes in line with the Beijing International Film Festival.

As for the larger bookshops at places like Chaoyang Park, bookshops have managed to create an intriguing experience through the inclusion of elements from films along with traditional books. An example would be the Wangfujing Bookshop, which will be exhibiting more than 3,000 books, including bestsellers, newer books, and even novels derived from popular TV drama shows.

Apart from simply exhibiting books, interactive presentations, classes, and discussions about storytelling are being organized by the book fair. Filmmaking, visual storytelling, and even incorporating artificial intelligence into creative work has gained much popularity especially among young people.

Moreover, there will be a special exhibit from the China Bookshop, where the bookshop will display the evolution of popular Chinese literature from books into film productions.

The fair is also staged in different locations in the city including parks and cultural centers in different parts of the city. Over 70 events have been organized that include author talks, readings, and cultural discussions.

This is the first ever big reading campaign in China where the network of bookshops will be used as the main platform for literature to reach out to more people.
