Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on Monday for the death of famed poet Munawwar Rana, saying he made significant contributions to Urdu language and poetry.

He remarked on X, "I'm saddened by the death of Shri Munawwar Rana Ji. He made significant contributions to Urdu literature and poetry. Condolences to his family and admirers. May his soul rest peacefully."Rana, 71, died on Sunday at the Sanjay Gandhi PostGraduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow after battling throat cancer.

Rana, born in 1952 in Rae Bareli, received the Gyanpeeth Award in 2014. His poems were quite famous among ordinary people.
