According to the Bookseller, In Ascension (Martin MacInnes, Atlantic) has been picked by booksellers in the United Kingdom as Blackwell's Book of the Year 2023.

The science fiction novel was shortlisted for the Blackwell's prize with Emperor of Rome (Mary Beard, Profile) and Greenwild (Pari Thomson, Macmillan Children's Books), which was also longlisted for the Booker Prize this year.

In Ascension presents the story of a scientist who examines ancient species all around the world, and her results call everything she believes into question.

'Winning Blackwell's Book of the Year outright, following writers like Daisy Johnson, Amia Srinivasan, and Rebecca Kuang, is really surprising to me,' said MacInnes. It's surreal and humbling, and I'm grateful to the shopfloor booksellers for their support of In Ascension, but also for their enthusiasm, expertise, and inventiveness in the critical work they do with books every day. Because of this, more people will read In Ascension, and I'm extremely fortunate, thrilled, and still somewhat stunned.'
