J. Carl Maxwell, Appointed as The Vice President Association of American Publishers

The Association of American Publishers recently announced that J. Carl Maxwell has joined the organization as Vice President, Public Policy. He is based in Washington, DC, and reports to Shelley Husband, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs.

Maria A. Pallante, President and CEO of the Association of American Publishers, said that Carl "joins our team with a strong expertise in public policy with substantial experience supporting academic publishing and scientific integrity." It is a pleasure to welcome him to the group, where he will play a significant leadership role in the industry on new global challenges.

"The AAP's advocacy effort is unparalleled," said Carl Maxwell. "I am excited to collaborate with the brilliant membership and all facets of the publishing community to address issues and investigate new opportunities."

Carl will work on a variety of government and industry initiatives in his new position to establish a workable legal framework for publishing companies of all sizes and specializations, including both for-profit and nonprofit organizations.

Millions of peer-reviewed research papers are published annually by AAP members collectively in almost all areas of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and humanities.

Carl spent nineteen years with the American Chemical Society before joining AAP, where he most recently oversaw government affairs, which included open science and environmental concerns. He began his career on Capitol Hill, where he worked for both Democrat and Republican politicians for five years.

He is a Red Sox enthusiast and has a bachelor's degree in political science from Bates College.
