The Government Plans to Release Regional Language Textbooks and Instructional Materials Soon

In a landmark move, the Indian government has instructed that all major higher education institutes and schools make learning materials available in Indian languages over the next three years.

This directive covers textbooks and study materials for all courses listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

The decision is consistent with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises giving learning opportunities in vernacular languages, believing that studying in one's native tongue promotes inventive thinking free of linguistic obstacles.

The NEP-2020 emphasises India's multilingualism as a valuable asset, which the government intends to leverage effectively for the country's socio-cultural, economic, and educational growth.

The mandate applies to educational authorities like UGC, AICTE, NCERT, NIOS, and IGNOU, as well as important institutions including IITs, central universities, and NITs. These organisations are responsible for making study materials available in Indian languages for all courses within the three-year time span.

The government's official declaration emphasises the incorporation of books in a variety of fields, including law, medical, engineering, skill-related courses, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Furthermore, it emphasises that school pupils' learning resources are now available on the DIKSHA portal in over 30 regional languages. The Ministry of Education feels that this step will help to promote multilingualism in education, which aligns with the NEP-2020's overall goals.

The ultimate ambition is to use India's multilingual diversity as a driving factor for progress, with the goal of being a developed nation by 2047.
