Beijing Book Fair to Showcase Cultural Legacies and Debut New Works

This year's Beijing Book Fair will begin on 14 April, Friday, with activities hosted by more than 200 booksellers and publishing houses in Chaoyang Park and 67 other sites spread over 16 districts and the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Region.

According to Guo Xiaoming, chairman of Beijing Publications Distribution Group and co-organizer of the book fair, in addition to themed works on the Communist Party of China's achievements in the new era and cultural legacies of the capital, as well as award-winning literature results, ancient texts, and secondhand books will be featured. There will be favorable discounts and promotional offers.

The exhibition will also offer book debuts and signings, as well as talks by seasoned writers, and it will honor well-known booksellers and industry insiders in the capital.

Online platforms such as JD, Dangdang.com, and Migu will also host book events.

The number of exhibitors has climbed by 50% over last year, while the number of brick-and-mortar booksellers has more than doubled. According to Zhai Degang, deputy chairman of the local Party committee's propaganda department, over 400,000 publications and cultural goods will be launched in the central display area at Chaoyang Park.

Each area of Beijing, according to Zhai, would promote its distinct cultural traits. Yanqing, for example, will focus on the cultural legacies of the Great Wall and the Winter Olympic spirit, while Tongzhou will invite specialists to discuss the Grand Canal's culture and history.

Since its inception in 1980, the book fair has grown to become one of the most prominent and accessible cultural events in the city, and it is expected to improve Beijing's cultural consumption, according to Zhai.

The book fair will be open through April 24.
