A new book on one of India’s most influential political figures, Jayaprakash Narayan, takes a closer look at his life, ideas and role in some of the defining moments of modern Indian history.

Titled Jayaprakash Narayan: The People’s Leader, the 208-page book by Arvindar Singh was recently launched in New Delhi in the presence of academics, journalists and legal professionals, including Prof. Apoorvanand, Vinod Sharma, Qurban Ali and Sanjay Hegde. Published by Niyogi Books, the book is priced at ₹239.

Singh, who has previously written about former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, approaches Jayaprakash Narayan’s story by looking at the different phases of his political and public life. The book explores JP’s socialist beliefs, association with the freedom movement, his engagement with Gandhian ideals and his decision to stay away from conventional party politics for significant periods.

One of the aspects highlighted in the book is JP’s relationship with Jawaharlal Nehru. Although the two differed on several political questions, JP remained an important figure in Nehru’s political circle. The book notes that Narayan was discussed during the 1950s and early 1960s as a possible successor to Nehru.

Beyond electoral politics, Jayaprakash Narayan was involved in several public causes. His work included efforts related to the Nagaland insurgency, the Kashmir question and India-Pakistan relations. He also devoted considerable time to constructive social work and the Bhoodan movement. Among the episodes discussed is his role in facilitating the surrender of hundreds of dacoits in the Chambal Valley during the early 1970s.

The later part of JP’s political journey is closely associated with the movement against the government of Indira Gandhi in the 1970s. His leadership of the movement became an important part of the political developments surrounding the Emergency and the emergence of the Janata Party as an alternative to the Congress.

The book also acknowledges the debates and disagreements surrounding JP’s political choices, particularly his association with different political groups during the movement. Rather than presenting his legacy as one-dimensional, Singh attempts to place these decisions alongside the larger political circumstances of the time.

At its core, Jayaprakash Narayan: The People’s Leader is an attempt to revisit a complex chapter of India’s political history through the life of a leader associated with socialism, Gandhian thought, social activism and democratic movements.
