Nobel Prize in Literature Awarded to Canadian Author Anne Carson
Anne Carson, a Canadian author known as a poet, essayist, and classicist, has won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2026. The Swedish Academy honored Carson for her unique literary production in which the author combines the traditions of classical literature and creates contemporary ones.
Born in 1950 in Toronto, Carson built a versatile career by combining writing poetry, essaying, translating, studying classical literature, and teaching.
Language and Classics as Key Elements of a Literary Career
Carson's education in classics greatly affected her literary production. Carson tends to explore connections between words, their meaning, and emotion in her writing using classical literary texts as a basis for her experiments.
The author is famous for her ability to switch literary genres without following genre-specific rules. Carson's literary production includes poetry books, essays, translations, verse novels, and other literary genres.
Her well-known books include "Autobiography of Red," her verse novel from 1998 which retells the ancient Greek myth of Geryon. Another important book is "Norma Jeane Baker of Troy," which weaves the tale of Helen of Troy with the life and public image of Marilyn Monroe.
Introducing Ancient Literature Through Modern Forms
Besides translating works of classical Greek authors such as Sappho, Sophocles and Euripides, Carson has worked in collaboration with ancient literature traditions, but with a twist as she modernises these traditions through contemporary language and structure.
"The Swedish Academy noted her 'bold and inventive oeuvre,' which plays a game with classical tradition and creates new forms of contemporary literature."
₹11 Crore Plus Nobel Prize in Literature
This year's Nobel Prize in Literature is worth 12 million Swedish kronor ($1.2 million). Carson is the latest addition to the list of winners of the literature prize, after Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai, who won it in 2025.
Carson joins the prestigious company of writers awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for their innovative approaches to literary forms.
