Entertainment conglomerate Paramount Global is returning to the publishing world by establishing a new imprint dubbed Paramount Global Publishing, more than two years since its sale of book publisher Simon & Schuster at a cost exceeding $1.6 billion.

The new imprint represents the company’s renewed emphasis on books as a key component of IP. Headed by Amy Jarashow, Paramount Global Publishing will come under the products and experiences wing of Paramount and will report to Josh Silverman, Paramount’s president.

According to Paramount Global Publishing, the new imprint will seek to create new stories and books based on the IPs owned by the company, in keeping with industry trends. In an effort to counteract franchise exhaustion, books have emerged as a highly profitable venture as they provide a ready-made audience while expanding the universes.

It will cover several categories and will cater to the reading needs of people of different ages and genres. While there are no details concerning its distributor yet, the company has assured that it will continue its collaborations with external book publishers under license agreements.

However, the decision by Paramount to re-enter the publishing sector is part of the larger trend within the industry, whereby studios are developing book-to-screen pipelines and transmedia storytelling projects. It seems that books have become more than mere source material; rather, they have become integral instruments for building worlds and enriching stories that will eventually be adapted for films and television.

For instance, Paramount Publishing has had its share of renowned authors, including Stephen King and Colleen Hoover, under its former brand name Simon & Schuster. The publishing house was bought out by private equity firm KKR in 2023, following a failed $2 billion acquisition attempt by Penguin Random House.

This new venture by Paramount is not unlike the recent collaboration between Fox Corporation and HarperCollins, as Fox has launched its publishing imprint with HarperCollins' assistance.
