Platforms Told to Share Revenue With News Publishers or Face Legal Action

Vaishnaw stated that the government would consider taking legal action against Digital and Social Media platforms should they not share revenue with creators and news publishers in a reasonable manner, as platforms that gain benefit from journalistic and creative work must provide fair compensation to those who produce the original content.

If platforms refuse to voluntarily change their revenue-sharing practices, the government may use regulatory avenues to require them to do so; Vaishnaw cited regulatory examples from other countries, etc., that supported this argument. He emphasized that fair monetization is about much more than monetary compensation, but it is also about protecting intellectual property and upholding the entire ecosystem of creative individuals journalists, independent creators, researchers and influencers from across the country.

The minister also indicated that in addition to revenue-sharing, platforms would need to accept a higher level of accountability for the content that they are carrying particularly with respect to deepfakes, misinformation and synthetic media in order to promote online trust and safety.
