The Chandigarh Administration has taken an important move towards ensuring better educational opportunities through providing free NCERT books to students of classes IX to XII studying in government schools.

Till now, the program was only available to students from classes I to VIII, but now more than 46,000 students studying in 111 government schools in Chandigarh will have benefited from the scheme. The administration has sanctioned a budget of nearly ₹5 crore for the session 2026–27.

As per the Director of School Education Nitish Singla, the first batch of books for classes X and XII has been received, and the process has started this week. On the first day, 7,000 textbooks were distributed, and the rest of the stock will be delivered to the schools shortly, with the process likely to be completed by the weekend.

This initiative has been taken under the supervision of Gulab Chand Kataria, who has sanctioned the budget in order to provide the same educational resources to the students of government schools as provided by the private schools. Stressing upon the aspect of equality, Kataria highlighted the point that money should not be a barrier for a child to receive an education.

Prerna Puri, Secretary of Education, confirmed the determination of the government to put the initiative into effective practice on the ground level.

A very positive reaction has been witnessed from the side of students, parents, and teachers. Students appreciated the measure as it will make them relaxed as far as studying is concerned. Similarly, parents have shown satisfaction with the decision as it will relieve them from increasing educational expenses.

The importance of removing the monetary hurdle before the beginning of the academic term was stressed by school principals because it would enable students to commence their education with renewed confidence and create a more balanced learning atmosphere.

This move by the administration of Chandigarh will go a long way in ensuring that all students have equal opportunities for success in their education.
