International Booker Prize 2026 Shortlist Puts Global Stories in the Spotlight

Now that we have an announcement for our shortlist for the International Booker prize 2026, it serves again to reinforce how impactful storytelling can be when you move them through different languages and cultures.

This year's shortlisted 6 incredible works of fiction come from nations all over the globe and include works like Daniel Kehlmann's The Director, Marie NDiaye's The Witch, and Yang Shuang-zi's Taiwan Travelogue. This year, the shortlisted works not only contain intimate stories to humanize all characters but they also tell the reader an extensive number of different people, details, and places.

The remaining works are; Shida Bazyar's The Nights are Quiet in Tehran, Rene Karabash's She Who Remains, and Ana Paula Maia's On Earth As it Is Beneath all of which create a different perspective on the issues of identity, history, and survival.

This year's emotional spectrum is striking. There are numerous stories related to historical geopolitical issues; there are also many that are profoundly intimate, almost non-verbal; yet all stay with you afterward. The judges described this year's collection as “humane” and “insightful” and I can certainly see these qualities in the collection.

The Prize is celebrating its 10th anniversary since its current format began, and it is even more effective now than ever at accomplishing its objective of bringing international writers closer to Anglophone (English-speaking) audiences while preserving their unique voice and deep emotional content.

The winner will be announced on the 19th May, and the £50,000 prize will be divided equally between the winner and their translator; a way of reminding us that translation is an art in itself, as well as technical skill.
