Book Review: The Truth About Ruby Cooper by Liz Nugent

Liz Nugent further establishes herself as one of the best voices in psychological suspense through the dark, disturbing, and emotionally harrowing novel, The Truth About Ruby Cooper.

The novel centres on Ruby Cooper, a highly troubled and unique main character whose world comes crashing down when, in her teens, she makes one small mistake in a tight knit church community in Boston. From then on, the consequences become devastating, and secrets, guilt, lies, and broken ties span continents and decades, from Boston all the way to Dublin. With stunning accuracy, Nugent describes the impact that one lie or bad choice has had on the lives of several generations of people.

This novel stands out in terms of its deep psychological insight. This is not only a story of suspense; it is a journey through human psychology and behaviour. The author is unafraid to show that there is no one good person or villain in any situation. Through Ruby Cooper, Nugent manages to depict an extremely complex individual. One page after another reveals layers of trauma, jealousy, shame, and denial.

It is relentless, yet driven by characters. Nugent weaves shocking disclosures together with intimate, emotional scenes which demonstrate how fragile family ties are and how painful consequences are to come as a result of being silent. There is seamless navigation through different time lines in order to build up the tension as well as reveal all the truth about what caused the destruction of the Cooper family.

Anyone familiar with her previous work, “Strange Sally Diamond,” can recognize her writing style. It is sharp language, morally complex characters, as well as the feeling of growing discomfort throughout each page. This book seems to be an even stronger creation since it is deeper emotionally and demonstrates the author's ability to create something unforgettable.

Disturbing, exciting, and masterfully written, it should be read in one go without putting the book down. This psychological thriller is suspenseful as well as deeply human in dealing with such topics as guilt, identity, and the past.
