AI Is Reshaping the Future of Scientific Publishing
Artificial Intelligence is transforming scientific publishing, improving peer review, editorial workflows, and research discovery while raising new questions about ethics and oversight.on Mar 16, 2026
How the publishing of scientific literature is changing is very little due to artificial intelligence (AI) Technology. There are many efficiencies now created with many new ethical and editorial issues in the future that have arisen since AI's use in science publishing.
In years past the process to publish in scientific journals was time consuming and required many manual processes to complete such as manuscript screening, reviewer selection and editor management. The use of AI is continuing to be embedded in these processes and has made it easier for a journal to identify peer-reviewers, analyze manuscripts, and develop editorial decisions. AI can analyze tens of thousands of previously published articles including citation references and other relevant data to provide journals with multiple candidates as reviewers as well as recommend potential reviewers with subject matter expertiese/area of expertise similar to the research study being submitted based on past work they have done.
Besides this added efficiency, AI technology is completing many of the tasks traditionally taking editors the most time such as plagiarism checks, format checks and summarization of research conclusions; therefore journal timelines for publishing will start to be significantly decreased due to journals being able to process submissions more efficiently, thus, getting the process of.reviewing and publishing scientific findings back on track.
AI is increasingly becoming a factor in the academic publishing community which has raised questions about the pros and cons of its use. While automation can aid in streamlining workflows and increasing efficiency, there are also those who express concern about the reliance upon algorithms and their potential to create biases or otherwise interfere with human judgement when determining merit of complex scientific work. As the use of AI tools in the publications process continues to expand, maintaining transparency within the process, ensuring accountability among users of these tools, and maintaining rigorous standards of peer review will be essential.
Although there are valid concerns about the use of AI in scholarly publishing, many believe that it will eventually become an integral part of the overall ecosystem of scientific publishing. AI is not going to replace the human editorial and review process; rather it is likely to serve as an enhancement to human knowledge and provide publishers with business-related tools required to address the ever-increasing volumes of research published on a global basis.
