The memoir offers a deeply personal account of Sonia Gandhi’s journey from her childhood in Italy to her life in India, her marriage to Rajiv Gandhi, her experiences within the Nehru-Gandhi family, and her eventual entry into Indian politics.

Belonging begins in Cambridge, England, where Sonia Maino met Rajiv Gandhi in 1965. She moved to India in 1968 and gradually adapted to a new country, culture and family. The book looks back at her relationship with Indira Gandhi, her years with Rajiv Gandhi and the experiences that shaped her life in India.

The memoir also revisits some of the most significant and painful moments in the Gandhi family’s history, including the death of Sanjay Gandhi, the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984 and the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. Sonia Gandhi recounts how these personal tragedies changed the course of her life and ultimately influenced her decision to remain in India.

Her journey later took her into active politics, where she became the longest-serving president of the Indian National Congress. The book also explores her decision to decline the office of Prime Minister after the Congress-led alliance secured a key electoral victory, choosing instead to lead the party and its governing alliance.

Through personal memories and reflections on India’s political and social transformation, Belonging explores themes of love, identity, duty, loss and belonging. It also provides an insider’s perspective on a prominent political family and on India’s journey over several decades.

Sonia Gandhi, who currently serves as a Member of the Rajya Sabha, has previously edited volumes of correspondence between Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, including Freedom’s Daughter and Two Alone, Two Together. She has also written and published works related to Rajiv Gandhi.

With its combination of personal experiences, political history and reflections on India, Belonging: A Journey of Love is expected to be one of the major political memoir releases of 2026.
