The first Taiwan International Children and Youth Book Fair will be held Sept. 18-21 in Taichung City to encourage reading among the nation's younger populations, the Ministry of Culture announced.
At a press conference Aug. 19 in central Taiwan city, Deputy Minister of the Council of Economic Planning and Development Lee Ching-hwi explained that the event is being prompted by the success of such events in Italy, South Korea and the Czech Republic. It will be held annually at a new location.
The Taipei International Book Exhibition, which is held annually, is one of Taiwan's major cultural events, and hosting a touring book fair will be expected to promote reading in cities across the nation, Lee said, noting that Taichung is the ideal place to launch the event as it's also the site for the proposed National Taiwan Museum of Comics.
Titled "Crossing Cities, Reading Without Borders," the show will have a theme city pavilion to highlight work done by the Taichung City Government to promote reading. There will also be separate children's, civic participation, comics, illustrated and literary areas, and the Italy pavilion of the 2025 TIBE.
The inaugural book fair will also feature handicraft workshops, interactive and experiential exhibitions, reading activities and promotional sales, as well as forums with bookstore proprietors, event curators, illustration artists, publishers, translators and writers from Taiwan, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Ukraine and the U.K. to exchange experiences with the public.
